POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator or Operations Director the incumbent is responsible for the safety, supervision, and security of all patrons in the aquatic area. The incumbent must ensure the safety of all members and guests using the facility. This position is also responsible for maintaining a clean and safe swimming environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Fulfill Y’s mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
  2. Promote and incorporate the YMCA core values and mission into all aspects of the job and in the community.
  3. Maintain diligent and constant surveillance of the water and pool deck areas at all times and respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Never leave the pool deck unattended.
  4. Enforce all aquatic rules and policies in a fair and consistent basis.
  5. Maintain emergency equipment in proper working condition. Report any problems or needs to the supervisor immediately.
  6. Attend all monthly mandatory aquatic in-service and other trainings as required.
  7. Measure and record chemical and temperature readings at designated times.
  8. Maintain bather load log sheets.
  9. Ensure all doors are locked and secured if last person to leave area or if pool area is closed.
  10. Fill out proper forms and turn in to the supervisor when there is an accident or incident.
  11. Perform daily cleaning (cleaning windows, picking up guard room, collecting lost and found, cleaning tables and chairs, emptying trash, and returning all equipment to its proper place, etc.).
  12. Participate as an active team member for the overall advancement of the association.
  13. Manage any problem situations that may occur. Evacuate the pool if situation becomes unsafe or if extreme situation would take attention away from the pool.
  14. Perform any additional tasks assigned by supervisors
  15. Showing up for all scheduled dates on time and in proper attire.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
  2. Must be at least 16 years of age with at least two years of High School or equivalent.
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Excellent human relation skills. Ability to address and correct inappropriate and unsafe behaviors.
  5. Must be American Red Cross Lifeguard Certified.
  6. Required trainings:
    1. Within 30 days of hire: Child Abuse Prevention (West Bend online).
    2. Within 30 days of hire: Blood Borne Pathogens (West Bend online).
    3. Within 60 days of hire: CPR and First Aid
    4. Within 90 days of hire: Listen First and Y Welcome
  7. Proficient in all standard business software including Google platforms and Microsoft Office.

  4. The employee will frequently be required audibly to address large groups of people in indoor and outdoor settings.
  5. Swim at least 500 yards; to dive up a depth of 10 feet; carry a 10 lb. weight 25 yards; carry at least 50 lbs. for up to 500 feet; ability to move at least 50 lbs.
  6. The employee will be exposed to cleaning chemicals as well as pool chemicals.
  7. The employee may be exposed to extreme hot and cold environments.
